A Mind Mastery Tool – Great For Helping You Get Unstuck
Here’s an easy-to-do little exercise I developed a few years ago for getting unstuck called “The 3 Rs Exercise.” It’s a mind mastery tool that helps you to create awareness and then gives you an empowering way to shift your perspective.
The 3 Rs Exercise™
Part I. Reflect
Write down the emotions that are making you feel stuck. Take a notebook or a legal pad, and journal your feelings in a stream-of-consciousness format. Let it all spew out. Don’t worry about grammar, punctuation or capitalization rules. This is only for you to see… unless, that is, you prefer to share it with your therapist or spiritual advisor!
Alternatively, you could use this guided format below, finishing the sentences with the first thoughts that come into your mind.
I am most…
sad about ____.
angry about ____.
fearful about ____.
regretful about ____.
worried about ____.
frustrated about ____.
Part II. Release
Take the previous page and shred it, burn it or wad it up and toss it out with the trash. Exhale.
Part III. Reframe
Step 1 – Make note of what is helping you to move forward by either doing non-stop, stream-of-consciousness writing or by simply finishing the following statements.
I am excited about ____.
Things have been better ever since ____.
I can clearly see ____ happening next.
Step 2 – Reframe your perspective by examining what you have learned or gained from your experiences. Choose either or both of the following and repeat for as many experiences as you’d like.
I have learned ____ from ____.
I have gained ____ from ____.
So that’s it. Simple to do. Some of my clients like using this exercise periodically while trying to affect a long-term change in their lives. Whenever there’s internal resistance, it’s useful to use The 3 Rs Exercise to remove the roadblocks and get back on track again.
