Working For Something And Meaning It

Last week I met a woman who, when joining the civilian workforce after 8 years in the Army, found it tough to adjust to hearing co-workers complain about their jobs. She was used to being surrounded by people “working for something & meaning it.”

Of course, it’s possible that folks around her in the military were discontent and just didn’t speak up about it. But she makes a good point about there being so much dissatisfaction.

Maybe the job IS the reason. If you make a change, and it works, and you’re doing something you love, that’s great. But for some of us, changing jobs doesn’t provide what we need after all. When that happens, it might be more than the work itself. It might be that you have other needs that should be fulfilled outside your career.

For some of us a job is simply a means to an end. It pays the bills & enables a desired lifestyle. I see people doing music, acting, writing, etc., and it’s not a main source of income, but they’re doing what they love anyway. And, naturally, I also see people volunteering & doing what they love through their charity work.

Food For Thought: Seems that getting paid for what you love to do is perfectly fine, and not getting paid for it is perfectly fine too. As long as you’re doing work you love :)
